The Reality of Leadership: Finding Balance and Support

As an entrepreneur with years of experience in leadership development, I understand what it takes to run your own business. I also know that things are not always as they seem when it comes to development and leadership.

You’re the leader, the boss, the CEO, and the buck stops with you. It doesn’t matter if your house floods or your cat gets sick – you have to keep it together. You’re the face of the company, expected to smile through whatever life throws at you. And sometimes, it arrives by the bucket load!

I know what that feels like. The truth is, you struggle like everyone else. You’re probably overwhelmed by the responsibility on your shoulders at times. If there's one thing you take away from this post, it’s that you’re not alone in the challenges of leadership development.

The Pressures of Entrepreneurship

Did you think being your boss would make life easier? You get to work when you want, pay yourself what you want, answer to no one... The fantasy of leadership development is somewhat different from reality, though, right?

Not only are you dealing with the everyday stresses and pressures that everyone else is, but you’re also running a company. You’re responsible for maintaining a secure, stable, and profitable business for yourself and your team. That's a hefty load to carry – one that’s sometimes too heavy to bear alone in your development and leadership journey.

You’re all too aware that if you make a wrong decision, it could impact the security of your employees' lives and those who depend on them. When you think of it, you probably feel that familiar surge of adrenaline, the anxiety that never seems to completely disappear. It may well be your constant companion – there’s an entrepreneur perk that doesn’t get mentioned!

But it doesn’t have to be that way. With the right motivation coach, you can navigate the pressures of leadership development more effectively.

The Reality of Leadership: Finding Balance and Support

Is It Time to Hang Up Your Superhero Cape?

In our culture, where success is marked by productivity and profitability, we idolize the Mark Zuckerbergs and Richard Bransons of the world. We try to be just like them – having it all together all the time. Constantly striving to smash goals and do better. In doing so, we hide behind superhero capes and masks. Always capable, strong, and available to sweep in and save the day.

It feels pretty good to be that superhero, but at what cost? Too many entrepreneurs are battling chronic anxiety while donning superhero masks and capes. You hide behind your superhero image because you feel you have to; it’s what’s expected of you.

But even superheroes need to lean on their mates now and again. This is where development and leadership come into play. It's essential to recognize that even leaders need support and understanding from a motivational coach to thrive.

What Can You Do to Ease the Load?

With all that you have on your plate and your efforts to keep going despite it all, is it any wonder you’re living with anxiety you can barely contain? It doesn’t have to be that way, though. There are steps you can take to ease the load and relieve the pressure.

Connect With Like-Minded People

In the words of the incredible Brené Brown, “Vulnerability is not weakness; it's our greatest measure of courage.” “People who wade into discomfort and vulnerability and tell the truth about their stories are the real badasses.”

I’m pretty certain you’re a badass, and I’d like to encourage you to tell your story. Your successes and failures, your struggles and your worries. Find others in the same position as you and lay it all bare! You’ll soon realize there are many others out there in the same boat, and connecting with them can support your journey in leadership development.

Take Good Care of Yourself

While you’re doing a great job taking care of everyone else, don’t forget to look after yourself too. Focus on getting a good night's sleep so you’re well-rested and firing on all cylinders for your benefit as well as your business.

Feel lighter after lifting weights? Hit the gym and go for it. Take your stress out on the punch bag or pound the pavement after a difficult day. Exercise gets your feel-good hormones flowing, and taking time for yourself will shred your anxiety along with some pounds!

Likewise, fuel your body and mind with what it needs to stay energized and focused. Highly processed convenience foods might be tempting on the go, but they zap your energy and dysregulate your nervous system, making it far more likely that you’ll suffer from fatigue and anxiety.

Manage Stress Effectively

When you’re the boss, you have to accept that stress is par for the course. But that doesn't mean you can’t learn more effective ways to manage the stress that will inevitably come your way.

Be intentional and proactive. You might love adrenaline activities to release tension, or perhaps a walk in nature is exactly what your nervous system needs. Practice meditation or take up yoga – both of which train you to sit with discomfort and steady your body and mind.

Listen to your favorite music or set timers for regular breaks (or days!) away from your phone or laptop. Incorporating small breaks into your day with activities that actively calm your nervous system will go a long way to helping you manage your stress levels and ease your anxiety.

It’s Lonely at the Top

The top can sometimes be a lonely place. There’s no boss to consult or lean on – you are the boss! While that’s an amazing achievement and one you’re no doubt proud of, it also means you do all the heavy lifting.

The consequences can be devastating. Chronic anxiety can become your only friend, and before you know it, the everyday tasks that used to be easy become overwhelming.

But there are things you can do to get out of an anxiety throwdown: connect with others, take care of yourself, and manage the inevitable stress in effective ways. Engaging with a motivation coach can provide the support and guidance needed for effective leadership development.

You don’t need to go it alone. That’s why The Lonely Seat exists. It’s a space for you to find other bosses of the world and plan dominion together!
